By applying Social Network Analysis, you can leverage your professional networks to achieve success.
With Linked In's API and programming knowledge, we can extract our Linked In data for network analysis. I wrote an overview on how to do that as well as what I found. The full detailed report is available for download here.
This is a brief summary:
How to do it consists of basically two parts:
My code also converts the Linked In's XML format in to a GraphML format that Gephi can read. Some interesting insights include the concept of Betweeness and detecting communities within the network.

My code also converts the Linked In's XML format in to a GraphML format that Gephi can read. Some interesting insights include the concept of Betweeness and detecting communities within the network.
Betweeness is a concept that the position of person in the network is as important if not more than how many connections they have. Notice that both happy faces have 2 connections each. Yet the green one that is Between the other two and therefore much more critical. |
By using Gephi, I viewed my network in two perspectives. The left controlling the size of the nodes by only the number of connections they have. The right changes the size based on the betweeness calculation. Notice that the betweeness shows clearly who the key people are that bridges the networks rather than just people who have the most connections. Click on the pictures to see them at their maximum size.
Gephi was also able to identify clear distinct communities within my network that I recognize and labeled accordingly.
The Social Networking Analysis (SNA) course on Coursera got me in to most of this and I love it. So much of our lives are affected by networks and it is great to access tools to comprehend it. I think there will be a time where people will demand an analysis of their networks just like they would for their financial statements.
